Are Cranberry Tablets Safe to Take with IC?

I was diagnosed with IC about a year ago and barely got my symptoms under control when I was hit with a bladder infection. Because I thought it was just a flare, I delayed going to the doctor for a few days….big mistake! Now, after ten days on antibiotics, I am still having symptoms. I know I can’t have cranberry juice to help with the infection (ouch!) but are cranberry tablets safe for someone with IC?

Although it is tempting, I would not recommend cranberry tablets since most IC patients find they cause very severe bladder symptoms. However, if you are still experiencing lingering symptoms, it is important to find out if you still have an infection or if the symptoms are a sign of a persistent bladder irritation secondary to the infection. If you haven’t already, it is probably a good idea to have your urine retested and cultured by your medical care provider. If you have an infection, you may need a different antibiotic. If not, I suggest that you take care of your body as if you are in a flare. Rest, eat bladder-friendly foods, and take any medications suggested by your medical care provider. I hope you feel better soon!
